I’ve always been drawn to painting animals. Growing up, I drew every dog, cat, horse, and bird I could get close to. Today, my animal paintings range from intimate portraits of pets — the kind where the owner sees the painting and says “that’s exactly how she looks at me” — to looser, more expressive studies of wildlife in motion.
My approach to animal painting is the same as my approach to everything else: loose brushwork, vivid color, and a focus on capturing the feeling rather than producing photographic precision. I want my animal paintings to feel alive. The casual sprawl of a dog in a sunbeam. The alert stillness of a deer at the edge of a field. The cocky posture of a rooster. The boneless relaxation of a sleeping cat.
I work across mediums for animal subjects — watercolor for its soft, luminous quality; acrylic for bold, saturated portraits; gouache for the matte warmth that works beautifully with fur and feather textures; and ink for adding graphic energy and fine detail.
