Flowers are one of the most honest subjects a painter can choose. They don’t pose. They don’t hold still. They bloom with everything they have, and then they’re gone. Painting flowers is about capturing that brief, extravagant beauty before it disappears.
I paint florals in every medium I work in — watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and ink — and each medium brings out a different quality. Watercolor captures the translucency of petals and the way light passes through them. Gouache renders the dense, velvety texture of a fully opened peony or dahlia. Acrylic lets me go bold, filling a canvas with saturated color and expressive brushwork. And ink adds graphic detail — the veining of a leaf, the sharp outline of a stem.
My floral subjects come from the gardens and wild places around me in Maine. Late-June peonies so heavy with petals they can barely hold their heads up. Summer wildflowers tumbling along stone walls. The deep purple of autumn asters. Bowls of garden roses on a kitchen table. I paint them loose and expressive, focused on color, energy, and the feeling of flowers in their prime rather than botanical precision.
