Painting people is different from painting anything else. A landscape can be beautiful in a general, atmospheric way. A flower can be loosely interpreted. But a person demands presence. Even in the loosest, most expressive painting, there needs to be something in the figure — a gesture, a posture, a quality of light on the face — that feels alive and recognizable and human.
That’s the challenge I love about portraiture and figure painting. I don’t paint photographic likenesses — my approach is expressive and painterly, using loose brushwork and vivid color to capture the essence of a person rather than every feature with clinical precision. I’m interested in gesture, mood, and the way light moves across a human form. A portrait, for me, is about who someone is, not just what they look like.
My figure studies range from quick, gestural watercolor sketches to more developed acrylic paintings on canvas. I paint people in moments of unselfconsciousness — reading, stretching, thinking, laughing, walking — because those are the moments when personality shows through most honestly.
