Ménage à Trois

Ménage à Trois was a bold, direct pepper still life — three vivid peppers painted with the unambiguous confidence of an artist who lets the subject do the talking. Molly Frantzen built the composition in her Maine studio around the contrast between the peppers’ glossy, saturated skins — sitting somewhere between red and orange — and the cooler, quieter tones of the surface beneath them. The title gave the painting a touch of wit that the composition earned: three forms in deliberate, slightly competitive proximity, each one pulling attention in a different direction.
