Pumpkins

Pumpkins captured that particular window in the Maine fall when the light goes low, the colors go deep, and even an ordinary gourd on a doorstep looks like it was set there for a painting. Molly Frantzen built the composition in her Maine studio from the rich ochres, deep oranges, and warm browns of the season — layered with the textural, expressive brushwork she brings to all her still life work. At a smaller scale, it had the quality of a piece that belongs in an intimate space: a dining room shelf, a kitchen windowsill, a corner that needed something autumnal and genuine.
